Configure Your Captive Portal

This guide will walk you through configuring your UniFi WiFi network to use the CaptiFi server for guest authentication and data collection.

CaptiFi Server Details

📝 Configuration Details

You'll need these details when configuring your external portal server settings:

🖥️ Server IP Address

157.230.53.133

Enter this IP in the External Portal Server field

🌐 Domain Settings

site.app.captifi.io

Use this domain for both Domain and Authorization Access settings

Step 1: Access WiFi Network Settings

📶 Navigate to WiFi Settings

  1. 1 In your UniFi Network Controller, click the Settings icon (gear/cog icon) in the left navigation menu
  2. 2 Click on WiFi from the settings menu
  3. 3 Select the WiFi SSID that you want to use for the captive portal (typically your guest network)

Step 2: Enable Captive Portal

  1. 1 Ensure the Captive Portal radio button is selected
  2. 2 Click on Hotspot Portal (this should be a hyperlink)

✅ Expected Confirmation Message

"We have applied your Hotspot Portal to this WiFi name. By default, portal guests will be isolated from other guests and network resources."

You should see this message confirming the hotspot portal is applied to your WiFi network.

Step 3: Configure External Portal Server

🔒 Authentication Settings

  1. 1 The hotspot portal will take you to a new page. Look for and click the padlock icon where it says "Authentication"
  2. 2 Under "One Way Methods", check the box for "External Portal Server"
  3. 3 In the External Portal Server field, enter the CaptiFi server IP address:

Step 4: Configure Landing Page Settings

  1. 1 Click the settings cog icon next to the padlock
  2. 2 Under "Landing Page Settings", make sure ALL the following boxes are checked:

Step 5: Configure Domain and Authorization

⚠️ Important Note

Both the Domain field and Pre-Authorization Allowances field should contain the exact same value: site.app.captifi.io

Step 6: Save and Complete

✓ Click "Save" to apply all your configuration changes

Your UniFi captive portal is now configured to use the CaptiFi server. Guests connecting to your WiFi network will be directed to our powerful authentication system.

❌ Common Issues:

  • • External Portal Server setting not found - ensure you have the latest UniFi controller version
  • • Guests not being redirected - check that Captive Portal is enabled and Hotspot Portal is applied
  • • Landing page not loading - verify domain settings and HTTPS redirection is enabled
  • • Authentication failing - confirm the server IP (157.230.53.133) is entered correctly

💡 Testing Your Setup:

  1. Connect a test device to your guest WiFi network
  2. Open a web browser and try to visit any website
  3. You should be redirected to the CaptiFi login page
  4. Complete the authentication process to verify it's working
